7 Best Stretches for Painful Sex on Top

Here’s what to do. But let’s get one thing straight before we go any further. Painful sex is not normal AND can absolutely be treated with a pelvic physical therapist like me so you can have the experiences you desire.

Why am I experiencing pain with penetration on top?

There could be many reasons WHY you’re experiencing pain with deeper penetration (trauma being held by your body, armoring around your cervix post-examination or surgery, and even labor and birth.)

This post was inspired by one of my past clients, where we ruled out internal pelvic floor tension, phases of her cycle, positions of her cervix and any emotional/energetic residue. After some searching and self exploration, we decided it was most likely due to some prior hip issues she had on the right side.***

Stretches that work for painful deep penetration

  1. Hip flexor/psoas stretch

  2. Quad stretch

  3. Pelvic circles on your shins

  4. Yogi squat to stand to forward fold

  5. Diaphragm release and rib lifts

  6. Abdominal massage/soft tissue release around belly

  7. Yogi squat with upper body movement

Do they actually work?

I’d encourage you to try and listen to your body! See what feels good and what feels tight.

***This client did these stretches and engaged in sexual play that night with her partner. She had ZERO pain that night. Game-changer!

Sex Shouldn’t Be Painful

Here’s the soap box moment again: pain with sex should never be tolerated, and the answer isn’t always about relaxing more, drinking a glass of wine, or taking pain killers to numb your body. LISTEN to your body.

Maybe it’s craving more movements like the ones listed above before being put into a deep position, maybe it’s craving safety and protection, maybe it’s craving time and different forms of intimacy prior to penetration.
